It Didn't Start With You

by Mark Wolynn

About the book

An accessible introduction to inherited family trauma and how patterns of anxiety, depression, and difficult behaviour can echo across generations. Drawing on his work with clients, Wolynn shows how looking back at family history — even quietly, on your own — can reveal the origins of struggles that seemed to belong only to us, and open real paths toward relief.

What I thought

This gave me a different way of thinking about certain patterns I'd only ever viewed through a personal lens. The idea that some of what we carry didn't originate with us — but can still be worked with — felt both freeing and grounding. What I appreciated most was the compassion in Wolynn's tone; there's no blame, only curiosity. It's the kind of book that gently nudges you to look at your family in a softer light, and to feel a little less alone in your own inner weather.
