What Happened to You?
by Bruce D. Perry & Oprah Winfrey
About the book
A conversation between neuroscientist Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey that gently reframes how we understand behaviour: not as "what's wrong with you?" but as "what happened to you?" Drawing on decades of research into trauma and the developing brain, the book explains how early experiences shape adult patterns — and how understanding this can open real paths toward healing.
What I thought
The part I connected with most was how much dignity this book gives to the reader. It doesn't reduce anyone to their trauma; it just explains, clearly and warmly, how our nervous systems learned what they know. I found myself reflecting on my own reactions with more curiosity and less judgment. It's the kind of book I'd hand to almost anyone — a genuinely accessible, deeply human introduction to why we are the way we are, and why change is very much possible.
